Weird, Random Facts

I was tagged by Alicia and I think I've done this before (click here). I'm going to not think about it very much and translate the old stuff and add a couple more. And I'm not going to tag anybody else but instead leave it open for people to reply if they wish to do so.


The rules:

1. I always carry my digital camera with me and I like to take pictures of food.

2. I greatly enjoy receiving letters and emails but I don't always reply to all of them.

4. I prefer to work when nobody is around and generally I don't talk about work.

5. Good food makes me happy, and when I'm hungry I get very short-tempered.

3. I don't wear a watch because it makes me stress about time. I still don't like being late or having others make me wait.

6. I like to wear crazy, bright-colored socks and shoes.

7. I hate doing laundry. It is the one thing that no matter how often you do by the end of the day you still have a pile of dirty clothes. I can go at least one month without doing laundry and still have fresh clothes everyday.

Paradox

Following the previous post's theme, the word of the day recently was paradox.

It says that paradox is \PAIR-uh-dahks\ noun

1 a : a statement that is seemingly contradictory or opposed to common sense and yet is perhaps true b : a self-contradictory statement that at first seems true
*2 : one (as a person, situation, or action) having seemingly contradictory qualities or phases

This perfectly describes the Physics department. There might be so many knowledgeable people and so little common f**king sense... and yet is perhaps true.

Awkward

It is such a curious word... AWKWARD. Only two out of seven of its letters are vowels, and they are the same one, twice. Two w's in the same word? Along with a k? It is the scrabble-guru's fantasy come true on a triple-point square.

But my favorite part of this particular seven lettered-word is its definition according to M-W Online. The fifth meaning says: "Lacks social grace". What a wonderful phrase! We should use that instead of saying awkward. Awkward is... well, redundantly... awkward. Awkward to say, to type, to spell... Lacks social grace is so much more smooth and graceful.

Facebook

I got sucked into Facebook recently and I have spent a lot of time browsing through the profiles of friends, classmates, schoolmates, old acquaintances, new ones, etc., etc. It is amazing... not the amount of time I have wasted (that is absolutely standard and unsurprising), but I'm talking about the Facebook phenomenon. I must say Cheers! to Facebook's creators they had the Vision and they were able to pull it off with style.
So forget other networking sites.. Facebook is the place to be.

The iPhone

Ok, so iPhones are the greatest thing on the market now. Come on, you can't deny it! Who would not want one? Who would not cherish an iPhone?

They are AWESOME! Of course, I can't really afford to buy one at the moment.

So while my Sprint contract ends, the price of the iPhones drops, their capacity increases (so that they become video ipods too), the ATT network ameliorates and you don't have to send in your phone to get the battery replaced when it dies, this is the only viable solution:

I recently saw this poster at a store (Outloud) and it caught my attention.

My new thing...

I recently discovered podcasts. According to Wikipedia, a podcast is a digital media file, or a series of such files, that is distributed over the Internet using syndication feeds, for playback on portable media players and personal computers.

They have proven to be a very efficient way for me to keep up to date with the news. They range in length and content, from 5 to more than an hour. Among my favorites are:

* NPR: Wait Wait... Don't tell me (weekly)
* New York Times Front Page (every weekday)
* CNN: Anderson Cooper (every weekday)
* AAAS: The Science Podcast
* BBC: Documentary Archive
* The Onion Radio News

And there are others...

Well, all I can say now is... ENJOY! :)

Women in Science

I'm not a natural-born activist. Never, until now, had I'd been actively pursuing a cause, regardless of whether I believed in it or not. But this women in science business, really gets on my nerves. I'm a woman. I'm in science, a physicist by education and an astronomer at heart.

Naturally I have lots of questions, mostly of which I can't answer.

Am I fighting a lost cause?

Is there an obvious point where I can say, "I had enough, I'm out!"?
Is it when I cry every night?

If I quit, is it letting "the man" win?

When is a PhD more important than happiness?

I think I have an answer for that last one... NEVER!

Maybe I have had enough.

Culture Shock...

No soy de allá, ni de aquí... quizá de ningún lado, o quizá soy de todos.

Había estado el blog un poco olvidado... pero espero estar de vuelta y al menos escribir una vez al mes.

He salido del país 4 veces en los últimos 4 meses, al menos una semana cada vez... ¿qué querrá decir?
